Climate Control

Hedgehogs must be kept in a temperature between 74-82 degrees. If their temperature is any lower than this they can attempt to go into hibernation which can be fatal in domesticated hedgehogs. If the temperature goes much higher than 80 degrees then they can overheat. (If you notice your hedgehog splayed out on its cage floor, this is a sign of overheating.) If you will have any kind of issue with maintaining this sort of temperature then you should purchase a few things for your hedgehog. A CHE or ceramic heat emitting lamp, this is like a heat lamp but without the light, so their daylight cycles aren’t affected. A thermometer, this should be inside the cage constantly reading the temperature. And finally you should have a thermostat, this will connect to the CHE and the thermometer and typically you should be able to set this up to where the thermometer will read the temperature, the thermostat will adjust the temperature of the heat lamp, and then the heat lamp will emit the correct temperature. (You can also set it up to heat for only a certain amount of time, but this isn’t as effective.)
